History

In 1668, a land grant was given to colonist and government official, William Sandford for a chunk of land with about 15,000 acres of space known today as Harrison. With Sandford's portion of land, he and his family built a plantation that was later passed down to his wife after he passed in 1691. Upon her passing in 1719, the land was left to their son William. The land continued to be split amongst the Sandford descendants until the mid-1700s. In 1750, a roadway was built leading to the Hudson Waterfront that allowed citizens to transport to and from the waterfront with ease.

In 1826, residents of Lodi Township petitioned for another county to be added due to the distance individuals from nearby townships had to travel to the courthouse. Inhabitants from Jersey City, Hoboken, Bayonne, Secaucus, Weehawken, and Union City petitioned to the additional county seat in Hackensack. After an appeal of the petition and a new one was sent, the establishment of Harrison Township took place and was passed in April of 1840.

In the following years, the township was incorporated and Harrison became a popular destination due to its large waterfront and multiple rail lines that made it easily accessible to neighboring areas.
