Known as New Jersey's largest municipality, Hamilton Township is located in Atlantic County with the largest area of land, totaling 110.90 square miles. The township was incorporated on February 5, 1814, by the New Jersey Legislature.

History

The history of Hamilton Township is strongly intertwined with the Great Egg Harbor River and its tributaries. In 1756, George May, for whom Mays Landing is called, established a shipyard and trade station on Babcock Creek.

In 1837, years after Hamilton Township began incorporated, it was then detached from Gloucester County and created a new county called Atlantic County. The township was named after Alexander Hamilton and was broken into pieces of land from nearby regions to form other townships.

Parks & Recreational Facilities

Residents and visitors enjoy visiting the Great Egg Harbor River as well as Lake Lenape year-round. Lake Lenape Parks offers visitors over 2,000 acres to explore and so many outdoor activities to partake in.

Pinelands Reserve

New Jersey Pinelands National Reserve comprises 1,100,000 acres of natural protected areas with extraordinary ecology that is recognized as a United States Biosphere Reserve and the nation's first National Reserve by Congress in 1978.

The New Jersey Pinelands Commission regulates the western three-quarters of the township, placing significant restrictions on development in that area of the township, which remains a pine forest with a decidedly untouched quality, with other areas classified as a Rural Development Area.

Prominent Residents

Hamilton Township is home to a variety of residents in the past or present, and are closely associated with the community such as:

  • Colin Bell; member of the New Jersey Senate
  • Darhyl Camper; singer and songwriter
  • Walter Lowenfels; poet, journalist, editor of the communist newspaper the Daily Worker.
  • Sharon Kay Penman; historical novelist
  • Suzette Charles; past Miss America in 1984
