The coastal, resort-style Atlantic City located in New Jersey is known as a party spot amongst locals and tourists with tons of beaches, attractions, casinos, and other forms of entertainment.

Fun Facts:

  • Atlantic City was one of the inspirations behind the game square in the United States version of the board game Monopoly.
  • The Miss America pageant's home base is in Atlantic City.
  • Gambling was illegal in Atlantic City until 1976, followed by their first casino established only two years after.

History

In the late 1800s, investors saw Atlantic City as valuable real estate for building a resort-style town, perfect for tourists. Only one year after the city was incorporated, they also established the first hotel called Belloe House in 1853. The Camden and Atlantic Railroad started running the following year, bringing residents and tourists across Atlantic City.

In 1870, the first boardwalk was developed along a strip of the shore to assist tour operators in keeping sand out of their lobbies. Each year, businesses were limited at the end of the busy season, and the boardwalk was dismantled.

Atlantic City saw a massive construction boom in the early twentieth century. Big hotels mostly supplanted the boardwalk's little boarding houses. The Marlborough-Blenheim Hotel and the Traymore Hotel were two of the city's most unique hotels.

Many historians see the 1920s as Atlantic City's golden period when tourism was at its pinnacle. Excessive alcohol was consumed, and gambling was widespread in the back rooms of nightclubs and restaurants during Prohibition, which was implemented nationwide in 1919 and lasted until 1933.

Today, the city still remains a tourist spot with lots of attractions, entertainment, and activities for people to enjoy.
