Following Newark, Jersey City is known as the second-largest populated city in all of New Jersey and is also the seat of Hudson County. Jersey City is considered a part of the New York metropolitan area, separated by the Hudson River that overlooks Upper New York Bay. Jersey City is a frequent hot spot for visitors due to its high ranks as the 10th most artistic city in the United States with tons of art exhibits, museums, and other historic landmarks.

History

The land in which Jersey City is situated once belonged to the Lenni Lenape Indian tribe which was later explored by Henry Hudson in 1609. Upon arrival on what is known today as the Hudson River, Henry Hudson also explored later named regions including Sandy Hok, Weehawken Cove, and Harsimus Cove.

In 1623, the new terrority was governed by the Dutch West India Company and later granted to Michael Reyniersz Pauw who was responsible for growing the population of the settlement. He purchased the west bank piece of land from the Lenni Lenape tribe and began recruiting settlers to come to the land called the North River.

Fast-forward to the 19th century, Alexander Hamilton, one of the founding fathers, was influential during this time period and focused on improving the economy of the surrounding areas of Jersey City. A few decades after, the city officially became incorporated and a part of Hudson County.
