During the 19th century, the area where Springfield/Belmont is situated once was a "shtetl" which was the name of a small town holding a population of Ashkenazi Jewish people. This group of people was prominent before the Holocaust in both Central and Eastern Europe. Those that lived in Newark usually worked as:

  • artisans
  • peddlers

This populations of Jews were dominant in the area up until the mid-1900s where many African Americans moved from the Carolinas and Virginia. Today, the demographic is mostly African American and has been a neighborhood tremendously affected by what is called white flight.

V A visitor would view the Art-Deco extravagance of Arts High School, the classically inspired St. Agnes Greek church, the grand Victorian architecture of the Krueger-Scott Mansion, the Beaux-Arts Feigenspan Mansion, a Neo-Classical former synagogue, and lastly the Moorish Revival Prince Street Synagogue if they walked along the street from north to south.
