Clinton Hill, NJ

Clinton Hill is a neighborhood in Newark located in the city's south-central area. It is situated on Clinton Avenue and is roughly bordered on the east by Elizabeth Avenue, the south by Hawthorne Avenue, the north by Avon Avenue, and the west by Irvington.

History

Dating back to the mid-1800s, Philip Tillinghast was said to have moved to the area with his large family that consisted of seven children from Manhattan. He was a well-known merchant and broker who worked in Wall Street and was a major influence in Clinton Township. Rich families moved further uptown into free-standing mansions or townhouses made of newly discovered chocolate sandstone as popularization and immigration overtook such Dutch and English Old New York Protestant neighborhoods.

Another group was motivated by writers such as Andrew Jackson Downing and Davis, who campaigned for villa living in semi-rural locations such as New York's boroughs of the Bronx, Brooklyn, Staten Island, and the Orange district of New Jersey, where Llewellyn Park was established in West Orange. During this time, Tillinghast also joined the land speculators in establishing an affluent enclave in what was called East Orange.

The neighborhood was increasingly occupied by immigration as it stretched out from Newark and westward to West Orange. The majority of those left behind were lower-middle-class Ukrainian and Jewish Americans.

Neighborhood Demographics

Upper Clinton Hill is mostly a residential neighborhood, with many of the residences also serving as offices for business owners. Along Clinton and Hawthorne Avenues, the majority of retail activity is concentrated on neighborhood convenience stores. Residents can shop in a shopping center on Chancellor Avenue, near the Irvington border, or close to Springfield Avenue.

The Lower Clinton Hill neighborhood in Newark has the largest number of unoccupied land and buildings. Several blocks of vacant ground can be spotted, with the exception of a few groups of older properties. However, unoccupied property makes up more than half of the community.
