Communipaw is an unincorporated community within Jersey City just west of Bergen Hill and the iconic Liberty State Park known as one of the first European settlements in all of North America. 

History

During the 17th century, European settlers inhabited the land where Communipaw is situated. The land previously belonged to the Hackensack Indians, a branch of the Lenape tribe. Other bands of tribes within the Lenape Indians also resided up and down the river, including the Canarsee, Tappan, Raritan, and Wecquaesgeek bands. 

In 1609, Henry Hudson began his exploration up and down Hudson Valley after anchoring along the Hudson River. He then came across Communipaw, and in a document log, he wrote the following to Robert Juet, "...a very good land to fall in with, and a pleasant land the to see." Soon after, the colony of New Netherland began establishing a community, building houses, businesses, structures, and farmlands. 

Historically, the settlement of Communipaw was a part of the colony that the Dutch West India Company governed. In 1653, it became a part of the Commonality of New Amsterdam, which comprised all of the colonies at Staten Island, Pavonia, Manhattan, and Long Island.

Communipaw became part of the Province of New Jersey, in the county of Bergen, after the last English conquest of New Netherland in 1674, though it kept its Dutch identity for hundreds of years. Through the 1900s, Communipaw represented a majority of the Dutch population and culture until immigrants started occupying the area, thus blending the community to become a bit more diverse.
