McGinley Square

Centrally located in Jersey City, McGinley Square is placed between two high-traffic roads called Mongomery Street and Bergen Avenue. To the south of McGinley Square, you'll find Journal Square, a popular business district with a large residential area. 

Background 

Over the last several decades, McGinley Square has grown into a hotspot amongst locals and visitors with its fast-growing entertainment, shops, restaurants, nightlife, and attractions. The area was named after the founder of St. Aedan's Church, Monsignor Roger McGinley, who constructed the historic church in the early 1900s. Irish immigrants drove most of Jersey City's expansion from 1850 to 1910, and many of them were attracted to Journal Square to work as controllers and operators of the trolleys that started there.

Within the Square also lies other imminent places that make up the area, including: 

• Hudson Catholic Regional High School
• Jersey City Armory
• St. Mark Coptic Orthodox Church
• Jersey City YMCA
• Bergen Square
• Journal Square
• The Beacon - an Art-Deco building that was once the Jersey City Medical Center

Currently, the perimeter surrounding McGinley Square is under development with future plans of building a possible entertainment complex and a three-story retail space that'll include a movie theater and a parking structure that holds up to 300 vehicles. 

Community Organizations

McGinley Square is home to a number of local organizations, with a few of our most popular, including: 

• Bergen Communities United - a non-profit organization in charge of planning community events.
• NJ Urban Enterprise Zone - works on enhancing the commercial area through a paid partnership with goals to improve the growing business district.
• The Highland Avenue Block Association - represents residents living within McGinley Square.
