Located within Gloucester County, Newfield is a community that will be celebrating its 100 years since its formation as a borough on March 8, 1924, in the next couple of years. The borough's name originates from its establishment as a "new-field" development.  Newfield has a total area of 1.74 square miles of both land and water. 

Demographics

Statistics provided by the 2010 United States Census shares that there was an estimated population of 1,553 individuals, with 579 households and 453 families within Newfield. The population density measures out to 912 per square mile, and the housing unit average density was 367.6 per square mile. 

Of the 1,553 residents in 2010, the following breakdown of the racial diversity includes: 

  • 94.66% White
  • 2.19% Black or African American
  • 6.57% Hispanic or Latino
  • 0.26% Native American
  • 0.32% Asian
  • 0.97% Other races
  • 1.61% Two or more races

The median household income in 2010 was about $67,350, and the median family household income is slightly more at about $67,045. 

Government

Newfield is administered under the Borough system of local government in New Jersey, which is used in 218 of the state's 565 municipalities, making it the most prevalent format of administration in the state. Mayor of Newfield Borough since 2020 is Republican Donald J. Sullivan, whose contract is up on December 31, 2022.

Education System

The Newfield education system is considered a non-operating school district after the New Jersey Department of Education allowed Newfield to end its contract with Beuna Regional School District in 2009. Newfield sends around 100 of the district's more than 1,400 kids to Franklin Township Public Schools for kindergarten through sixth grade.
