Union City, NJ

Located in the northern section of Hudson County, Union City is ranked the 540th most populous city in the United States. In 1925, Union City was incorporated as a city and merged between Union Hill and West Hoboken Township. Since its incorporation, the city has had two waves of immigration of both German and Spanish backgrounds that heavily influenced the community.

History

The Munsee-speaking branch of the Lenape Native Americans settled in the area that has become Union City. The tribes happened to have ventured into the woodland area where they encountered Henry Hudson during his voyages from 1609 to 1610 for the Dutch. Early Dutch immigrants and Native Americans had a tumultuous relationship, with numerous violent confrontations over territorial claims.

Even centuries later, the land where Union City is now situated, remained sparsely inhabited until the early 19th century. Dutch and English settlers first immigrated to the area, followed by Armenian, Syrian, Italian, Irish, Polish, and Eastern European Jews.

Despite the fact that more than 19 cultures lived in the Dardanelles from the mid-nineteenth century to the early twentieth century, German Americans and the Dutch occupied the majority of the region. They developed the European-style lace manufacturing industry, which they were famed for, with the help of Swiss and Austrian immigrants.

In the 21st century, one of the most prominent events hosted in Union City is the Cuban Day Parade of New Jersey, hosted by tons of local small businesses.
