Camden is located within Camden County in New Jersey and is recognized as a city right across from the Delaware River overlooking Philly. Camden is a quite large city being the 12th most populous city in New Jersey with a population of about 73,562 in 2019. It is also known as the county seat of Camden County and has over 20 neighborhoods within its boundaries.

History

Charles Pratt, 1st Earl Camden, was a politician, judge, and lawyer who is where the name Camden was derived from. Camden was a rich manufacturing city in the early 1900s, and it remained so during the Great Depression and World War II. After nearly 50 years of economic and industrial progress, Camden industries then went through a major decline, causing businesses to gradually close and move out of the city in the early 1950s.

A dramatic population fall accompanied the loss of manufacturing employment. Suburbanization, which resulted in racial prejudice, was enabled by the expansion of the interstate highway system causing a high about of crime within Camden.

21st Century

Though the city was originally known for its booming manufacturing industries; after the economic decline, focuses were shifted to medical and educational concentrations. Some of the top educational and medical facilities within Camden are the following:

  • Cooper University Hospital
  • Cooper Medical School of Rowan University
  • Rowan University
  • Rutgers University-Camden
  • Camden County College
  • Virtua
  • Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center

In recent years, the Camden waterfront has also undergone major construction and renovations with spending $830 million for rehabilitation purposes. The New Jersey Economic Opportunity Act, passed by the New Jersey Economic Development Authority in 2013, offers opportunities for businesses to relocate to or remain in socioeconomically deprived areas of the state. The majority of these incentives are in the form of tax reductions that are paid over ten years and are equal to the project's cost.
