A famous business district and residential community within Jersey City, Journal Square received its name from the prominent newspaper Jersey Journal. The newspaper had its headquarters located in Journal Square from its establishment in 1911 until 2013. The community is surrounded by the following areas, including India Square, Bergen Square, McGinley Square, Marion Section, and Five Corners.

History

Journal Square was initially known as the site full of agricultural fields and farmhouses that were owned by the first settlers from Bergen, dating back to 1660. Many structures were removed to make way for modern buildings when the Hudson and Manhattan Railroad Summit Avenue station opened in 1912, notably the Labor Bank Building and the Public Service Building. When the city banned and removed the offices of the Jersey Journal in 1923, it developed a significant crossroad with Hudson Boulevard, which had already been expanded in 1908.

The iconic Hudson County Boulevard Bridge was constructed in 1926 by Abraham Burton Cohen and continues to be used as a transportation bridge. During the majority of the 20th century, Journal Square was a massive component of the cultural entertainment industry. The area was home to the following iconic places used within the industry:

  • 1920s movie palaces, The State - popular in the early 1920s and was later demolished
  • The Stanley Theater (1928) - located on Kennedy Boulevard and is known for hosting orchestral performances, live theatrical shows, and more.
  • The Loew's Jersey Theater (1929) - a movie theater designed for both live entertainment and musical performances in the Jersey City area.

The Journal Square Transportation Center, which contains the Journal Square PATH and bus station, was built between 1973 and 1975.
