The DWI defense attorneys in Droyer's Point, NJ from Levow DWI Law, P.C. are happy to sponsor this article on Dryer's Point in hopes our readers learn something new about the area.

Droyer's Point was once known as the site for the Jersey City Airport as well as the Roosevelt Stadium, which both have since been torn down and are now mainly residential and commercial areas. The area is located within Newark Bay in the southwestern part of Jersey City along New Jersey Route 440.

History

As mentioned above, Droyer's Point was originally home to the Minkakwa and Morris Canal, Jersey City Airport, and Roosevelt Stadium.

The Minkakwa and Morris Canal was initially a tidal marsh that belonged to the Hackensack and Raritan Indians during the time European settlers made their way to the land in the early 17th century. Before Europeans took over the area, the Indians called the area Minkakwa, which translates to "a place of good crossing," conveniently named due to its precise location between two bays. The Morris Canal, built in the 1830s just inland of Droyer's Point, took advantage of the topography to cut over Pamrapo. After that, the canal went along to the bay before joining the river more north.

Jersey City Airport was constructed in the early part of the 20th century in hopes of allocating different distribution facilities that would ultimately help the CRRNJ Newark and New York Railroad. The airport was finished and opened in 1927 and was run by Eddie August Schneider, one of the first aviation experts of that time.

The Roosevelt Stadium was designed with an Art Deco-inspired look and was named after Franklin D. Roosevelt. The baseball park opened to the public in 1937 and was home to the Jersey City Giants. In the 1970s, the stadium was used for hosting summer events such as festivals, concerts, performances, and more. Unfortunately, in 1982, the Jersey City Council no longer saw value in the stadium and voted to demolish it.
